Music Introduction Series

Picture
These beginner level classes are designed to introduce new students to the study of music in a small group setting (3 to 6 students).  This is a great first step as students will learn fundamental musicianship with instrument technique and good practice habits.  The beginner series class will prepare the students for a wonderful relationship with music.

Parents are responsible for providing the instrument; we can make suggestions for purchases and rentals.   HSPA will provide the starting book and practice handouts.  Students will be provided opportunities to perform for other students as well as friends and family.

Classes are $15/week

Private Music Lessons

Picture
Private lessons are designed for each student. Regardless of a students’ ability, techniques will be used to bring a greater understanding of the individual instrument and its role. Each class involves a warm-up, review, and new material.

Two recitals are scheduled during the school year to provide the students with performance opportunities. These recitals are not required, but certainly encouraged.  Teachers will work with interested students to prepare appropriate pieces for the recital and teachers will recommend students, based on skill, to participate in ensembles as well.

Jazz Combo

The Jazz Combo will serve as a great supplement to students participating in their jazz bands at school or those who are interested in learning to play jazz music. The majority of the focus will be on improvisation within the jazz genre as well as performance practice. This includes: jazz rhythmic feels, soloing techniques, arranging jazz tunes and interacting with other musicians. Each class will have a music theory component, such as learning intervals, chord symbols, chord types and jazz scales and modes. Students will be encouraged to work as a group to develop 3-4 standard jazz songs towards being ready for a performance at the end of the semester.

Stage Combat

Stage combat is a specialized movement discipline designed to create the illusion of physical combat without causing harm to the performers. It is employed in live stage plays, operatic, and ballet productions. The term is also used informally to describe fight choreography for other production media including film and television. It is a common field of study for actors and dancers and is closely related to the practice of stunts.

Combat 1:
For Beginners:  Fundamental single sword combat will be the focus for the session. Students will learn choreography, develop scenes, and perform their work for family and friends at the conclusion of the session.

Grades 9-12
Session 1: Session 1: Thursdays from 7:00 to 8:00 pm | 9/6/12 to 12/20/12

Combat 2:
Prerequisite: Combat 1

Acting 2

Students will prepare dialogue of their own creation while implementing skills learned in the Act 1 class.  Strong physicality will be continued in order to develop characters.  More voice work will be added and musical themes will be encouraged.  Elements of technical stagecraft will be introduced such as flat construction, framing, and painting.  This interdisciplinary approach brings students into the creative process and ultimately allows them to stand by their own choices.

Fall 2012 to be announced soon!

Improvisation Workshop

The Improvisation Workshop is designed to be stylistically open and inclusive of students of all levels, instruments and musical backgrounds. Each class will focus on exploring and utilizing melody, harmony, rhythm, texture and timbre as a means to develop greater musical expression, instrumental technique and the ability to interact with other musicians. Students will be encouraged to verbalize their musical thoughts and become team leaders. The class will use open improvisations as well as repertoire of various styles brought in by both the teacher and students as a basis for improvising.
