"The Coffee House" Open Mic Nighthttp://www.hollistonschoolfortheperformingarts.com/article.php?id=54 Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Our first of many Open Mic nights start this Friday!  Come and Join us for a collaborative artistic experience.

Teen musicians and poets are invited to participate in “The Coffee House” at the Holliston School for Performing Arts (HSPA), 1657 Washington Street, 3A (behind the Holliston Post Office) on Friday, Oct. 7, from 7 to 10 p.m.  Performers are welcome to arrive at 6 p.m. to begin signing up.   Admission is $5, which covers refreshments.

“We are inviting musicians from all towns and of all genres and levels of experience to share their talents and have a great time on a Friday evening,” said HSPA owner Chris Roberts.  “We have long wanted to offer this type of event to the community as a way for teens to showcase and share their music and art with one another and also create an opportunity for them to gain experience in a performing environment.”

Roberts said his school will provide the sound system, drum kit, microphones, amplifiers, and piano. Performers are invited to bring their guitars or other instruments and share one song or poem. Musicians and poets are asked to prepare a piece that is no longer than five minutes so that everyone has an opportunity to be on stage.  Solo performers, collaborations, and band performances are all welcome.

This monthly event is a collaborative among the HSPA, Strike a Chord Concerts for Charity, and Ben Speaks, which helps, in part, to create artistic programs for teens and young adults.

“We are thrilled that the HSPA is dedicating its time and resources to teen musicians and poets throughout the Metrowest area,” said Judy Giovangelo, founder of Ben Speaks.  “One of our missions is to continually work toward providing different opportunities throughout the community in which young people can express themselves artistically.”

For more information about The Coffee House, call 508-429-HSPA.

Music Ensembles
Join HSPA faculty in realizing your dreams to play in a band!  Put your skills to the test, learn standard songs, and perform for friends and family in our studio!  We create ensembles with the students in mind so if you want to play in a classical duet or a full on rock band we can help take your skills further!
Look at what students did last year

All of the music faculty have a hand in shaping the ensembles and placement is based on proficiency.

What is the schedule?
Session 1: October 15th – November 19th
5 rehearsals and 1 performance for $100
Session 2: Coming in January 2012

Our schedule is flexible as we have multiple teachers working on this project on multiple days.  However, a guiding principle is to assemble students based on achievement.  With that in mind we will talk with interested families and create a suitable, consistent schedule.

We have the current availability:

What is the student commitment?
Students will need to practice at home and be ready to play at each session.  Participants will receive musical selections based on difficulty.  A classical piece will take more time to rehearse than a modern pop song. We encourage you to think about quality over quantity.  Students are asked to practice their pieces during their private lessons as well.

How to Join?
If you are a currently registered student, inform Chris Roberts of your intention to join.  If you are not currently registered we will meet with you for a brief interview and audition prior to session starts.  Ask yourself this:  What type of ensemble would I like to play in? What genre of music? How big or small is the group? Give us a call at 508-254-3017 or email Chris at Chris@hollistonarts.com

Capoeira
Capoeira is an art form that involves movement, music, and elements of practical philosophy. One experiences the essence of capoeira by "playing" a physical game called jogo de capoeira (game of capoeira) or simply jogo. During this ritualized combat, two capoeiristas (players of capoeira) exchange movements of attack and defense in a constant flow while observing rituals and proper manners of the art. Both players attempt to control the space by confusing the opponent with feints and deceptive moves. During the jogo, the capoeiristas explore their strengths and weaknesses, fears and fatigue in a sometimes frustrating, but nevertheless enjoyable, challenging and constant process of personal expression, self-reflection and growth.  -By: Mestre Acordeon
